Surge Requena

The Lil White Cup

Surge Requena, VP of Marketing and Super Producer for New Chapter Music group was raised in NY’s Washington Heights. Everywhere you turned there was some type of music playing. From a car driving pass bumping hip hop to a 1st floor apartment filled with soulful sounds from way back and even salsa leaking out from the doors of a local corner store, Surge was living in a massive blend of music. Using his surroundings Surge developed a style like no other and continues to form his craft. We caught up with Surge outside of a local Washington Heights Chicken store called Caporal. The time was 12:15am but the night was still young. With a Snackbox in hand and a Nutcracker in the other, Surge takes a sip of his drink and a big smile appears on his face and he screams out to his boy “Yo thats my shit!”(Referring to a song Bumpin’ out of his boy’s car)

We pulled him aside and asked him a few questions.

How did u start making beats?

“Surge”: Well I’ve always loved music, I would steal my sister’s lil casio keyboard and play with it when i was younger. She would hate it when I messed with her things lol, but I would anyway (lmao).I started as a rapper at first but no one would give us beats , so I was like Fuck it im gonna make my own beats. Once I started I loved it and stopped rappin’ and kept making beats.

Did u take classes on production?

“Surge”: Nah, I just taught myself. I was that kid who would open a video game and not read the book and just play, I would learn along the way. So when I started making beats I just pressed buttons and keys like Fuck it I’ll learn. At first my tracks were trash lol, my boys would laugh at my tracks, and I thought my shit was fire! lol. But along the way I started to get the hang of these. It’s like I grow a ear for sound, and can hear what would sound good together.

So do you know how to play the piano?

“Surge”: Nah shit just comes out. My boy Sauce makes fun of the way I play the keys cuz my fingers look funny as hell lmaoo!!.But if you hear my tracks you would think I know how to play. I get infront of the keyboard and just go where the sound takes me.

Do u look up to anyone?

“Surge”: Yeah my bro Younglord!!, that’s the nigga right there man!

So whats in the box?

“Surge”: LMAOOO!!! Caporal!! this is my crack right here , I love this chicken!

Look for Surge Requena’s work on the Dynasty “The Prince of Dancehall” project, Kev CharLatan Project and much more..
